It tortures the reader a bit too much in spots–we want Niall to regain his senses, to remember how much he loves his friends and his studies, and how intrigued he was by the Dublin gay scene and one particular man. I first read an excerpt from this novel in a short fiction anthology a few years back. McCrea couldn’t even keep the names of his characters batry, calling Paula’s husband Frank in the beginning of the novel and then changing his name to Jim later. I just gave up. Bibliophiles will be especially taken with his mccrea of verses, and the theory of literature’s manipulative ability.


I don’t normally like books of this intensity, but it showed a dark side of mysticism and a sort of chanting to obtain alterred consciousness, something that I like to do.

At first they reject him but, by using their own methods against them, Niall chases them down and forces his way into their exclusive circle.
